PROUD WINNER OF THE 2011
GOVERNOR'S SERVICE AWARDS

Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism Chair,
Maurice "Mac" Nachlas with President Lynda S. Weinstein

"Since it's formation in 1916, the group has transformed from a small group of women that realized the mutual benefits of cooperation and exchange to a group of 30 organizations that have joined forces to address major social issues.  In 2011, the Federation celebrated it 95th anniversary.  Through its membership, the Federation participates in a variety of volunteer activities including tutoring, stocking food pantries, community cleanups, clothing drives, and training sessions  The newly formed Social Action Committee informs constituent organizations of ways to integrate social action into their activities and serves as a model by participating in social action activities." From the Governor Service Award Publication 2011

The E.B.Hirsh Lifetime Achievement Award
Created in honor of our past Federation President E.B.Hirsh
E.B.Hirsh
E.B. Hirsh followed her own advice throughout the years. When asked what she would offer today’s youth, she replied, “Participate! Get Involved! Study! Attend Religious Services!”
And get involved, she did! E.B. served as President of The Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations of Maryland in 1963. Because she inspired not only  those who preceded her but also the many women who followed her, Federation honored her memory with the E.B. Hirsh Lifetime Achievement Award. She continued in an active role in Federation after her term in office. She created and edited "Leadership Logic," a manual for the presidents of our umbrella organizations. E.B. also was the author of Federation's "The 3'I," Invocation, Introduction, and Installation.
E.B. made her mark on the community as well as her synagogue, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. She served on many committees and boards. In addition to Federation, she held various offices, including President of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Sisterhood, and the Baltimore Guild. One of her proudest achievements was helping create Baltimore Hebrew Congregation's Pre-School.
E.B. graduated from Goucher College with a major in early childhood education, and dedicated herself to the Jewish youth of Baltimore. She served as a religious school teacher, was involved with various youth groups, organized and directed Mt. Washington Cooperative Nursery School, and helped found the Council of Cooperative Nursery Schools. She was the author or co-author of numerous books, including a children's version of the Bible.
